Paul Weir will not return next season as men's basketball coach at New Mexico.
Athletic director Eddie Nunez announced late Friday that he and Weir decided it was time for a split. In four seasons, Weir has a 58-61 record with the Lobos.
"Paul and I agree that a change of leadership in our men's basketball program is in our best interest at this time," Nunez said. "While this year has certainly been challenging for Coach Weir, his staff, and our student-athletes, after evaluating the overall program, it is the appropriate time for a new beginning. I want to thank Paul and his family for their commitment and service to New Mexico and we wish them the very best in the future."
Weir will coach the team through the end of the season. The Lobos (6-14, 2-14 Mountain West) have one more game on the schedule -- Wednesday at Colorado State -- before the conference tournament, which begins March 10 at the Thomas Mack Center in Las Vegas.
"This is the perfect time for a transition in Lobo Basketball," Weir, 41, said. "I can't imagine a more optimal epoch than now for all of us to embrace a fresh start."
The Lobos had a difficult year just finding a way to play. Because of strict COVID-19 precautions in New Mexico, the team has spent the season out of state. They've been living in hotels since Nov. 20 and have returned to Albuquerque only for a few short stretches, such as final exams and the holidays.
They made their home in both Lubbock, Texas, and St. George, Utah.
Prior to joining New Mexico, Weir led New Mexico State for one season, posting a 28-6 record in 2016-17 and earning an NCAA Tournament berth.
