This is a story about opportunity. It may not seem like that when you hear that 4.5 million Americans quit their jobs last month, but there are 10.6 million job opportunities in the U.S. right now. The "great resignation" is a shift in employment, not a surrender to unemployment. If you're quitting for a career "glow-up," you chose the right time to do it.
Meanwhile, many folks are still sitting idle at home trying to figure out debt consolidation while unemployed. Fear of omicron, faith in government stimulus assistance, and expectations of another pandemic shutdown are keeping them out of the job market. That creates more opportunities for you. Here are some tips to help you take advantage of them.
According to a salary increase budget survey conducted by the Conference Board, U.S. companies are increasing their salary budgets by an average of 3.9% for 2022. That means you can be more aggressive when negotiating your financial requirements. Don't settle for less. It's a seller's market for job seekers right now and employers are willing to pay more.
Hospitality and food service are two of the industries people are leaving right now. They've both been directly affected by the pandemic, along with health care, social assistance, and transportation. They're all hiring, and most are paying more now than they have in the past. It's a good time to enter these sectors if that's something you want to do.
There are 2.1 million federal employees in the U.S. and 4.1 million contract employees. With the expansion of government under the new Biden administration, those numbers are going up. If you're looking for a stable job with benefits and a pension, the federal government may have an opportunity for you. States are also hiring right now.
Pet nannies and play-to-earn gamers are just two of several part-time gigs you can turn into a full-time income. Thousands of people around the world relied on side hustles to make ends meet during the pandemic. Many of them never went back to work in the "real world." It's not a bad option if you quit your job and want to go into something new.
Open your computer and go to Freelancer.com or Fiverr. They are two of dozens of online sites where you can find full-time employment or contract work. With the technology available now, you don't need to leave the house to make money. If you have the right skills ets, find an online job. You can even travel while you do it. Digital nomads are a growing demographic.
The Bottom Line: Jobs are Out There if You Want Them
There are plenty of jobs out there. Salaries have gone up. Online gigs are plentiful. Restaurants are paying bonuses to get people to work for them. The government is hiring, and the application/approval process has never been more advantageous to the job seeker. It's no wonder that folks are quitting their jobs to "glow up" their careers.
