WASHINGTON D.C.: Due to seat-belt mechanisms that could explode and shoot out metal fragments in the event of a crash, Hyundai Motor America is recalling 281,000 vehicles in North America.
The recall is focused on malfunctioning seat belt pretensioners, a part of the seat belt system that locks the seatbelt in place in the event of a crash.
Coming after three reported injuries, the recall covers some 2019-2022 Accent, 2021-2023 Elantra, and 2021-2022 Elantra hybrid vehicles.
Dealers will use a covering to secure the seat-belt pretensioners and provide additional protection.
This week, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the recall expands and replaces four earlier recalls. All Accent, Elantra, and Elantra HEV vehicles already repaired under previous recalls will need to have a second recall fix completed.
The company said the new recall includes 239,000 vehicles in the U.S. and 42,000 in Canada.
In September, government officials asked Hyundai to assess a crash involving a 2021 Elantra, in which the driver-side seat belt pretensioner allegedly deployed abnormally, causing metal fragments to injure an occupant's leg.
The company, which has extensively investigated the issue, said it was still actively investigating Venue and Genesis GV70/GV80 vehicles previously recalled.
