The New York Red Bulls acquired U.S. goalkeeper Ethan Horvath from Welsh side Cardiff City on Thursday.
Horvath, 30, arrives on a free transfer after New York sent $150,000 in 2026-27 general allocation money and the highest of its 2027 second-round draft picks to Charlotte FC for his discovery rights.
'Ethan brings a tremendous amount of experience and professionalism to our group,' Red Bulls head of sport Julian de Guzman said. 'He has competed at the highest levels, and his leadership will be invaluable for our locker room and our goalkeeping unit as a whole.'
Horvath is signed through June 2027 with options for the 2027-28 and 2028-29 seasons.
'Ethan has been a proven winner for both club and country, and we are really excited to add him to our roster ahead of the 2026 season,' NYRB coach Michael Bradley said. 'He has shown throughout his career that he can perform in big moments. He is a strong shot-stopper, commands his area well, and fits the way we want to play.'
Horvath has spent his entire pro career in Europe, playing for Norway's Molde (2013-17) and Belgium's Club Brugge (2017-21) along with England's Nottingham Forest and Luton Town.
The Colorado native made 36 appearances after joining Cardiff City in 2024, including eight clean sheets. He spent 2025 on loan with England's Sheffield Wednesday, recording two shutouts in 16 matches.
Internationally, Horvath has posted three shutouts in 10 appearances with the U.S. national team. He is a two-time Concacaf Nations League champion and was named to the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster.
