Here are the biggest takeaways from the Chargers 2025 schedule:

Early AFC West battles

There's no easing into this one.

The Chargers will play three straight AFC West games to open the season, kicking off some early battles in what could be the NFL's most competitive division in 2025.

The Bolts begin the season in Brazil against the Chiefs before heading to Las Vegas for a Week 2 date on Monday Night Football. The Chargers then come home for their SoFi Stadium opener in Week 3 against the Broncos.

This marks the first time since the 2022 Saints that a team has opened a season with three consecutive division games.

The last time the Chargers did it? 1988 ... when they opened the season with five division games in a row.

Jim Harbaugh's squad now has a chance to make an early statement in the the first few weeks of September. If the Bolts can be 2-1 (or even 3-0), they could be in the early driver's seat to contend for the AFC West crown.

3 home primetime games

The Chargers first two games of the season are in primetime, meaning all eyes will be on the Bolts.

And while the Chargers have three more primetime games, they will each be held at SoFi Stadium.

The Vikings come to town in Week 8 for a Thursday Night Football matchup before the bright lights of Los Angeles welcome the Steelers for a Week 10 date on Sunday Night Football.

The Chargers final primetime game is a Week 14 matchup against the Eagles on Monday Night Football in what could be one of the best games of the season.

The Bolts went 2-3 in primetime in 2024 but both wins came at home against the Bengals and Broncos. Holding serve at home again on national television could do wonders for a Chargers playoff push.

A Week 12 bye

Finally.

After having a Week 5 bye in each of the past two seasons, the Chargers were gifted a late bye by the NFL this season.

Would a team prefer for their bye to be smack dab in the middle of the season? Sure.

But having a late November bye means the Bolts will have to grind through 11 games before getting a rest to recharge for a final six-game surge.

This is the latest bye week the Chargers have had since 2019, which was also in Week 12.

Early air miles

Aside from the game in Brazil, the Chargers have three road trips this season to the East Coast against the Giants, Dolphins and Jaguars.

The Bolts will see two of those teams early on as the team will travel to New York in Week 4 and then Miami in Week 6. (The Chargers are at home against Washington in Week 5).

While the Chargers might have preferred these games to be a tad more spaced out, you won't hear any complaining from Harbaugh's squad.

As for the Jacksonville game? That is in Week 11, just before the bye week.

Mini bye in Week 8

Games between the Chargers and Vikings can get a little wacky. (The 2023 edition featured a 28-24 Chargers win and included four lead changes as each team put up exactly 475 yards of offense).

The teams will meet in primetime in 2025 on Thursday Night Football at SoFi Stadium.

The storylines here will be aplenty, especially considering that J.J. McCarthy will likely be under center for Minnesota. McCarthy led Michigan to a national title in 2023 when Harbaugh, Jesse Minter and a handful of other coaches were in Ann Arbor.

The benefit of a Week 8 game on Thursday? The Chargers then get a mini bye before heading to Tennessee in Week 9.

Key November games

Speaking of that Titans game, the Week 9 date in Nashville kicks off a four-game stretch that will be critical to the Chargers playoff chances.

The Bolts are at Tennessee before hosting Pittsburgh on Sunday Night Football (Week 10) and then going to Jacksonville. Then comes the bye and a Week 13 home date against the Raiders.

The Titans, Jaguars and Raiders all hope to be much improved from a season ago when they each picked in the top six spots of the 2025 NFL Draft.

Put another way, this is the time for the Bolts to pick up some wins and make their playoff push. They'll need to make some hay here because their December schedule is a gauntlet.

Back-to-back Super Bowl opponents

Welcome to December, here come the Eagles.

The Bolts will host the defending Super Bowl champs on Monday Night Football in Week 14 at SoFi Stadium.

As we've mentioned before, this will be a measuring stick game for the Chargers, who want to play with the same physical dominance that the Eagles displayed last season.

The Chargers could turn some heads here with a win at SoFi Stadium.

Of course, things don't get any easier as the Chargers then head to Arrowhead in Week 15 to play the Chiefs.

And yes, it's another trip to Kansas City on a short week, just like in 2022 and 2023.

This is undoubtedly the toughest two-game stretch on the entire Chargers 2025 schedule.

Earning it in December

If the Chargers are in the playoff conversation come December, they will certainly have to earn their way in.

Games against the Eagles and Chiefs, which we covered above, open a tough four-game slate.

Week 16 is a road game in Dallas against the Cowboys, who could very well be in the playoff mix in the NFC.

After that? It's home against Houston and then on the road for the season finale in Denver.

That's four teams (minus Dallas) who made the playoffs last season and will be yearning for another taste of postseason football.

And you can bet the Cowboys will want to be back in the playoffs after missing out on the dance a year ago.

We'll find out a lot about the Chargers come December.

Rematch against the Texans

The Chargers simply weren't good enough in their January Wild-Card loss to the Texans, especially up front on both sides of the ball.

The Bolts allowed 168 rushing yards and also allowed Justin Herbert to be sacked four times and hit plenty more.

The Chargers will have to wait almost a full calendar year to see the Texans again, but that doesn't mean they won't be fired up for this one.

And with this game being in Week 17, implications for playoff seeding, respective division races and a place in the AFC hierarchy could all be on the table.

Week 18 in Denver

The Chargers will end the season on the road for the seventh time in the past eight seasons.

This one will be at Mile High, a place the Chargers struggled to win before getting a big road win in 2024.

We'll state it here that the AFC West could very well be on the line when these two teams meet. The Chiefs have won nine straight division titles but the Chargers and Broncos both appear to be ascending teams who could take that mantle in 2025.

The Chargers swept the Broncos in 2024 but this January game in Denver could go down among the AFC West's most juicy battles in recent memory.

If that's the case, this could be the very final game of the entire 2025 season in primetime.
